PayPal could cancel my transactions and credit but I could not cancel them
It was at the start of its existence actually, so about 10 years ago. I was just discovering the possibilities of eBay in buying old books and magazines that were no longer printed. Really basic things related to fantasy and RPGs.
I registered with paypal since some sellers required it and started using it. My purchases were truly insignificant stuff on the vicinity of 5 or 10 dollars per purchase.
I carried out around 4 or 5 transactions of the sort.
Then I found a DVD of a japanese film (I remember the title: Battle Royale) that was unavailable were I lived at the moment.
I clicked the “buy now” button on eBay to terminate the bidding and got me a nice DVD for about 8 dollars.
Or so I thought.
Shortly after I received pretty angry sounding and annoyingly aggressive correspondence from “Them”. I imagine it was what has become the usual: Your account has been frozen without explanation because we believe you are an untrustworthy lout, and if you are not you will be because you will not be able to pay your debts”.
I was paraphrasing but I bet that is basically what they mean.
In any case, the simple purchase of that cheap DVD ended being one of the most complex and expensive purchases I have ever carried out of such a simple article. It took days just to sort out a way to pay the seller. Those ways were mildly inconvenient but more than anything really expensive. The final cost of my DVD was on the vicinity of 24 USD and I received it some 3 weeks later.
Besides all no apologies ever came from them. I got a bad note from the seller (or whatever it is called in eBay, since I use it no more), “They” never explained why “They” had done it, did it twice more in the pathetic 3 month period I was their costumer and when I decided to let them know of my displeasure I found there were no means to communicate with the staff. Trying to cancel my account to show them I did not like being treated like a criminal had no impact because I was informed in one of those angry letters that I could NOT cancel my account. They could cancel my transactions and credit but I could not cancel them.
Seeing how popular they are and how many people demand that I should pay them via this service makes me want to puke.
